In Chinese Surname culture, Hundred Surnames is an elementary teaching material that has been prevailing and circulating for the longest time. Compiled by a scholar from Qiantang (Hangzhou) in the early Northern Song Dynasty, this book developed common surnames into “four-character” verse, similar to a four-word poem, which makes reading more smoothly, and it is easy to learn and remember, even though it is devoid of unity and coherence in writing.
